About the Rotary Club of North Melbourne
The Rotary Club of North Melbourne is a small, friendly group that meet twice a month. We meet on the 2nd and 4th Thursday each month. At our meetings, we have thought-provoking guest speakers and we discuss our various projects, as well as enjoying the company of one another and guests. Apart from being a friendly group, we are also very diverse with members from their 20’s to their 70’s and equal Male and Female membership. We also have members from several overseas countries such as India, Malawi, Italy, Greece, Poland, Somalia, Hong Kong, and Sri Lanka.
Our club provides funds and support for both local and international projects. Some of our local projects involve providing assistance to the homeless, to new refugee communities and for men’s and women’s health especially Woman’s Ovarian and Breast Cancer. As well we provide programs for local young students to attend such as Model United Nations debating programs, Youth Leadership programs and Science Forums. We also always participate in the local Queensberry Cup each year.
Internationally, we have been providing support to a small regional community in Somalia by assisting their local hospital with medical and hospital supplies. We also, have a relationship with a Rotary group in Siem Reap, Cambodia that control our on-going donations supporting a family in need and we receive regular feedback from them on how the family is going. As well over the years we have distributed numerous water filters to communities in South America that have been used by families and schools.
We occasionally host Rotary Exchange students. Our major project is the Phonse Tobin Awards where we recognise outstanding community members for their voluntary work in the community.
We fundraise in a number of ways with a big proportion coming from major BBQs such as at Moomba and elections.
Visiting Rotarians and anyone interested in Rotary are invited to any of our meetings. You will be certain of warm greetings and welcoming company.
