Well, we've had a run of speakers lately where a good and close rapport has been established with our members. This definitely was the case last week. We had Lucia Halliburton from Ames Australia speak to us about the support they are providing the newly arrived refugees from Afghanistan.

It was clear from the meeting that if we keep in contact that there should be ways our club and club members can engage with some of this group of people to the mutual benefit of both them and our club. We also pointed out or BBQ expertise and just today Lucia contacted me with an enquiry if we would be open to them engaging us to provide a Christmas BBQ. I don't have the date but it is to be a Friday so Judy and I should be available. They are also organizing a Youth Carnival next year that will require a BBQ.

Last week I mentioned the A Spirited Journey: The Seven Women Documentary that Stephanie Woollard produced and was screened over 3 nights at a cost of $25.00/person.

The purpose of raising the funds was to provide scholarships for young people over in Nepal to go to school and get an education. This costs $250.00/student. Well, they had 153 bookings for the 3 screenings and raised $4,750.00 which is enough for 19 children.

For those that missed it, we can still get to view it again. Please contact me and I will organize a link for you.

If anyone wants to keep in touch with Seven Women then they can sign up for their newsletters, cooking classes, monthly updates, or become an ambassador please visit our website https://sevenwomen.org/home

The picture I particularly include this report here straight after the one about educating young people in Nepal as it also relates to the same at-risk group.

Social Media Reaches Rural Nepal

Picture this: Under the gaze of the planet’s tallest mountain, Mount Everest, a teenage girl grips her smartphone while leaning against the mud-brick wall of her shack in a village in Nepal.

She watches her parents struggle. They toil the rugged landscape for rice to earn up to four dollars a day. Although she wishes to help them financially, she has minimal education after leaving school at 13, and jobs are scarce across the country. But her phone vibrates, brightens, and a message appears from a young man. He seems charming — asking questions and listening to her pour out her heart – including the challenges she and her family face.

After a few months, he offers her a well-paying job in a neighbouring country. Desperate to believe a life of security is only a bus ticket away, she packs her bags. This is a similar scenario for the girls rescued this year along the borders that circle Nepal. Traffickers offered false jobs, marriages, or travel opportunities. And these connections were often formed on social media.

Mona, a Destiny Rescue caseworker in Nepal, says it is “so easy” for traffickers to bait poor girls in the country to travel abroad. “It’s pretty common to become friends with random people through social media and start messaging. Even educated Nepali friends will share personal things with strangers,” she says.

"Between January and June, our team rescued 330 women and girls. Of them, 88.5% were intercepted at borders around the country. Our border agents interviewed over 9000 travellers at our 14 border stations in Nepal. Those interviews led to just under 300 rescues at the border"

Through Rotary contacts, we have been offered 800 Bras to distribute to women in need. I contacted Sainab and as expected she accepted and they are being delivered this week for use within her SWDA community with whatever is left to be used later.

RIMERN    (Rotary Inner Melbourne Emergency Relief Network)

Our next shift is this Saturday 30th October 2021 at 1.00 pm at 32-34 Lincoln St East Brunswick.

At this stage, we have 4 scheduled to attend and they are our President, Sainab Sheikh, and Herbson Singo, and also 2 of our new volunteers that have come from the North West City News who is Michelle Donelly and Vidya Yeleswarapu. Vidya was on our Zoom last week.

I am trying to get a roster going and so I need people to let me know if they are able to volunteer and when so I can incorporate them into my schedule.

This is my list as I have it at the moment. I am pretty sure that there are people willing to do shifts that I haven't put them into below simply because I have not contacted everyone.

So please if you are down for shift there and you can't make it then let me know and if you aren't down for shifts that you can do also let me know as we can have more people attend and also if we have even more supply then we can nominate for more shifts. If anyone else is interested to get on our roster then please contact Judy Page on 0425 741 624 or email on judypage3@gmail.com. You do have to be double vaccinated

Last week the district had Morning Tea with the DG and our President Sainab Sheikh did a great job presenting there. I had a call just the next day for her details so they could book her in to be a speaker at a RAWCS Seminar in February
